| DESCRIPTION |
This lovely setting of English divine George Herbert's version of the 23rd Psalm combines a simple, folklike tune with a somewhat bluesy part for soprano saxophone (a clarinet or other Bb instrument may be substituted). Oddly enough, it works.
This tune had its beginnings in my delight with the sound a friend gets on her soprano sax; I just love it, anytime she picks it up. I wanted to include it in a sacred piece. Casting about for a text, I found this wonderful George Herbert take on the 23rd Psalm. I always enjoy setting Herbert's texts, and this was no exception. I opted for a simple verse anthem, letting the text, a folklike tune and the sax carry it off.
The response of the congregation and the chorus to this work has been very positive. It's fairly easy to work up and offers a new take on a well-known text.
